Mothers Day 2019

If there is one thing I understand - it is that Mother's Day is not a universal concept.
Nor is it a comfortable place for many people. Every year - the older I get - I watch myself and my friends come into their truth. The truth beyond the FB posts and pretty roses. The truth beyond perfect parenting, ideal families, cute slippers and Insta lives. It's usually an uncomfortable truth, a little awkward, sometimes great - and often painful.

It may be lost children, lost parents, fractured families, no kids or someone else's kids or just happy families - it's all someone's truth. But it isn't one size fits all.

For so many - Mother's Day isn't just about your mum. She may be here, she may be not. She may be here but not in your life. She may be far away or so sick she doesn't recognise you. She may just be the one thing that keeps it all together. It changes the more years you are on this earth. And that's a good thing. From that, you grow.

I had the good fortune to celebrate mine with a loud long distance phone call to my mum, I was able to say go you and I love you to my sister and to message my dearest girlfriends who raise children against the odds and with them. I also pampered the hell out of myself.

Mother's Day is just another opportunity to really celebrate the women in your life.
Use it wisely and with abandon.
